Watching your child experience medical procedures is difficult, and doing so away from the comforts of home make it even more difficult. While children receive treatments, Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley (RMHC) keeps families together and provides them the comforts of home.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley’s 17-bedroom facility has served over 350 families in 2019 thus far. RMHC of the Red River Valley has been proudly serving Fargo since 1982. Since then, they have seen an increase in the medical services the community provides and therefore an increase in demand for their “home away from home.” As needs continued to grow, in May 2018, they opened a new location east of Sanford Hospital with many more amenities, ample accessibility, increased privacy and safety.

“Our House is much more than simply a place to stay. We strive to provide a secure place where additional strength and stability is received from a comfortable room, amenities of home and other families in similar situations to connect with,” said Johnsrud.

Most recently, they opened North Dakota’s first Ronald McDonald Family Room at Essentia Health on 32nd Avenue in Fargo. The space here serves as a respite for families at Essentia Health Hospital. Even if only for a few moments, this space provides an area for family members to take a shower, have a quick break or grab some snacks, just steps away from their child.

“Our community is so lucky to have the amazing medical facilities that we do. Many people have to travel long distances to receive the critical-care that is provided right here in our community! Without the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Red River Valley there may be kids that do not receive the care they need,” said Johnsrud. “RMHC bridges access to top medical care, provides emotional and physical support, enhances a child’s hospital experience, and improves a family’s coping and cohesion.”
