Born in Paintsville, Kentucky, four-year-old Gayle began singing along with the radio to country and pop music. Inspired by her older sister, Loretta Lynn, Gayle learned guitar and started performing folk songs on Lynn’s tour when she was in high school. Immediately after graduating, Gayle was signed to Decca Records.
Gayle released her debut album, “Crystal Gayle,” in 1975 and its track “I’ll Get Over You” became Gayle’s first Number One hit. Her second album, “Crystal,” dropped one year later, and was followed by the successful, “We Must Believe in Magic” in 1977. Its hit track, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” garnered substantial international airplay before going Number One, and won Gayle a Grammy for “Best Female Vocal” in 1977. “We Must Believe in Magic” also became the first Platinum album by a female country artist.
Gayle followed her breakthrough success with a string of popular songs lasting through the next decade. Her hits include, “You’ll Never Miss a Real Good Thing (Till He Says Goodbye),” “Ready for the Time to Get Better,” “Talking In Your Sleep,” and her first Number One duet, “You and I.” In 1986, Gayle released a holiday album, “A Crystal Christmas,” featuring classic and contemporary holiday hits.
Gayle has more than 20 Number One hit singles and has won numerous Grammy, Country Music Association, Academy of Country Music, American Music Awards, and American Music Operators Association awards. In 2009, Gayle received her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
