To spread the word and shine a very bright light on animals finding forever homes, Fargo Monthly has decided to feature cats, dogs and birds from the various shelters and rescues in the Fargo-Moorhead area. Each month, we are sharing the stories of animals looking for loving owners. Today, we are featuring five birds from Center for Avian Adoption, Rescue, and Education (C.A.A.R.E.), a volunteer run, non-profit organization dedicated to the welfare of companion parrots. Check out some of these adaptable birds and consider bringing one (or all) home!

If you’re interested in providing these parrots a loving home, visit for more information about the adoption process.

Blue Pied Parrotlet, Male
Age: Approx. 15 years old
Size: Very Small

Blue parrot

“This is Blue! He is a blue Pied Parrotlet. He is around 15 years old and wasn’t handled much but doesn’t appear to mind. He is looking for a “retirement” home to live the rest of his life in. A quiet environment would be nice for this old fella!”

Severe Macaw
Age: Approx. 18 years old
Sex: Unknown
Size: Medium/Large

Cookie parrot

Important information: Cookie will bond with one person and will probably be aggressive towards anyone else. Parrot experience is required.

“Cookie is a Severe Macaw. Cookie loves to fly around and land right on you. Like most Macaws, Cookie can get pretty loud and would not do well in an apartment setting. She is a very nice bird and will be sure to melt your heart.”

Umbrella Cockatoo, Female
Age: Approx. 8 years old
Size: Large

Katie parrot

“Katie loves to cuddle and be around anyone. She can get very loud and cannot be in an apartment. She is currently in a foster home due to her surgery on August 21. C.A.A.R.E. is currently doing a fundraiser for Katie to pay for her surgery. Donate here.”

Tootsie and Daisy

Orange Winged Amazon and Nanday Conure
Age: Possibly around 10 – 15 years old
Sex: Unknown
Size: Medium + Small

Tootsie and Daisy parrots

“Tootsie is an Orange-Winged Amazon and Daisy is a Nanday Conure. They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together. They came from a not-so-good situation and are doing very well now. Tootsie is warming up but is a little shy and Daisy is very sweet.

“They can get pretty loud and would not be able to live in most apartments. The pair is currently in a foster home to help with the adjustment period from not being handled.”
