Whether it is North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota or even Canada, there is a place or event for everyone to escape to for a weekend. Badlands National Park
Roughly 500 miles to the Southwest of Fargo-Moorhead lies one of South Dakota's two National Parks. The eroded buttes and grassland make it a premier spot for camping and hiking. You may even see a buffalo or two along the way.
Wind Cave National Park
This national park is located South of Badlands National Park in South Dakota. Wind Cave was the first cave in American history to be designated as a National Park site. The eroded calcite that created the cave itself stretches close to 141 miles, which makes Wind Cave the sixth-longest cave in the world.
Theodore Roosevelt National Park
The lone National Park in North Dakota is one of the most pristine areas in the entire state. Split into three units, the park is tied together by the legendary Maah Daah Hey trail, which stretches a total of 144 miles. For an experience unlike any other, you can hike or mountain bike that trail or one of the many throughout the park.
Voyageurs National Park
In the far Northeast corner of Minnesota lies one of the state's crown jewels. Voyageurs National Park provides a serene getaway for any outdoor enthusiast. The surrounding waters are perfect for the fisherman or canoeist in all of us. There are also several wilderness trails to peruse at Voyageurs.
Otter Tail Lake
With 21 square miles of lake, Otter Tail is the largest in the county, which should provide you some space from others enjoying what the lake offers. It is a great place to fish for walleye and northern pike specifically. There are also several beaches, which will allow you to hit the shoreline and enjoy some food and drinks.
Shooting Star Casino
For those up for spending a little money and enjoying some nightlife, Shooting Star is the place. The closest casino in proximity to Fargo-Moorhead is only 70 miles Northeast in Mahnomen. Outside of the gambling, Shooting Star consistently brings high-end musical acts to its stage. Those two put together make for a night out unlike any other in Otter Tail County.
Maplewood State Park
If you are looking for a perfect place to enjoy the lakes of Otter Tail County, as well as adventure through Minnesota's forests, Maplewood is your spot. The park is surrounded by eight lakes, as well as many other ponds, which should provide you with open water. Back on land, there are 9,500 acres of forest for you to hike and explore.

Ideal Conoeing:The Pembina Gorge area is a fertile river valley, perfect for this water sport.
12,500 acres:The region is one of the largest areas of untouched woodlands.
