A Look Inside: MSUM Planetarium

Travel through space and time at the MSUM Planetarium! This unique facility can take you from the deepest depths of the ocean out to the farthest reaches of our visible universe. The sky’s the limit with their recently upgraded digital projection. The planetarium is not just about space but features programming created in arts and culture as well. Regardless of your interests, there is something for everyone!

Planetarium History

The MSUM Planetarium recently celebrated its 50th anniversary. Looking back, what began as a facility meant for use in college courses soon drew the attention of the community as well. Since early on in its existence, it has engaged and inspired by bringing the night sky and space exploration within reach. Today, it not only takes the community beyond the stars but is also a unique venue for a wide variety of programming.

Programming

The space hosts a multitude of programs, like a monthly “What’s Up: Stars and Sounds” with local DJ 1PrettyRicky to talk about what to expect in the skies for the next month. They have special shows for holidays, like “Skies over Hogwarts” for Halloween and “Romance Under the Stars” for Valentine’s Day. There are topic series like “Solar System Explorers” that can earn the participant the status of official “Explorer” once a number of the tours are completed!

For Everyone!

Get the entire family involved at the planetarium! While they typically offer public shows on Saturdays at 11 am and Sundays at 3 pm, there are a variety of special events and programming throughout the year. Most shows are for general audiences, but some are geared specifically toward younger audiences and others toward older ones. The target audience’s age is typically listed in the show description.

Admissions

Public shows rates typically $6 for adults, $3 for children (12 & under), Seniors (55+) and Veterans. Memberships and private bookings are available!

Unique Experience

Not only is the planetarium the only digital system in the FMWF area, but it’s also the only one in the region. With the uniqueness of their technology, their programming offers a one-of-a-kind experience. Whether your family is attending an event or looking to schedule a private event, the planetarium is very accessible to the community.

Celebrations!

The planetarium hosts birthday parties, anniversaries, reunions, corporate events and more. You can rent the planetarium and an expert presenter by the hour and have the content customized to your preference. They also have the capability to host games, like Mario Kart for example, on the dome as well as team-building activities. If you are looking for the coolest place in the universe to host your group, look no further!
