When you think “Dirty Word” you start to get somewhat dirty thoughts. In this 14-year-old band’s case, Dirty Word is simply just a name. The four piece mixed genre band originated in Bismarck, N.D., and has used Fargo as their local host for their shows over the years. When asked how dirty they really are? They simply replied, “there is nothing dirty about our music and that sometimes can act as a curse in booking situations, although Elliot’s long dreadlocks can tend to get dirty at times” (laughs) Last month these guys embraced the stage at JT Cigarro, and FM Spotlight had a chance to censor out some of the dirty words in an intense interview.
What’s Dirty Word all about?
We are a bunch of music freaks and have been keeping a revolving alumni group of guys in the band over the past 14 years. We tend to lean toward the bluesy side of music and like to incorporate a different spin on popular music. We are a grassroots and hard working band. We do our own booking and believe in getting out of what you put in.
What Does Fargo mean to you?
Fargo is our home base. We could have went the Minneapolis or even New York/LA route but have found Fargo to be an amazing place for music. The music scene here is amazing and genuine. The other artists really appreciate the music and other bands.
Where do you go in your free time in Fargo?
We like Juano’s Downtown – always great Mexican-style food. We also just tried that Lucky’s 13. That place was really good!
What’s new with the band?
Recently, we added our new amazing bass player Casey Smith. Also, Elliot will be leaving the band for a while to tour with the national musician Eric Hutchinson, which is so cool on so many levels. Finally, we will be adding a new member to the band. His name is Brian Gallagher and he has played with Prince, Taylor Hicks, Mandy Moore and many others. This guys plays everything! Even the flute!
John, your 11-year-old daughter plays and sings with the band at times. Tell us about that?
It’s amazing! As a musician, to see my daughter follow in my footsteps and see her success makes me the happiest guy in the world. Especially because she is only 11. I don’t think you can make a guy more proud!
Any pre-show rituals?
Haha, there are some that we don’t like to mention. Ok, I guess one we can. We sometimes like to pull pranks on each other. We have splashed water on other band members to make it look like they peed themselves right before going on stage. Good for an awkward laugh or two.
So what’s next?
It’s hard to say, but I will say that it is going to be the most exciting next couple of years we have ever had. With the edition of Brian, and Elliot making a national splash, the amount of opportunities will be endless. The most we can do, is just continue to get better, work hard at entertaining and have the best possible time we can!
